Retired U.S. Marine Corps Major James Capers Jr., a South Carolina native and decorated Vietnam veteran, has received the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award, nearly 60 years after his extraordinary acts of bravery in combat.

Then a second lieutenant with the 3rd Force Reconnaissance Company, Capers led a reconnaissance mission in Vietnam in April 1967 when his team came under heavy enemy fire.
